The ongoing 2024 Joint Admissions Matriculation Board’s policy meeting on Education in Abuja saw strong opposition from stakeholders against the newly pegged minimum admission age of 18 years.

The announcement by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, sparked immediate resistance from members representing various tertiary institutions nationwide, turning the session chaotic.

As the uproar prevented the minister from proceeding with his address, he queried, “Are we together?” In response, stakeholders emphatically voiced their dissent with a resounding “No!”

Despite the disruption, the minister continued to explain the rationale behind setting the new admission benchmark at 18 years, undeterred by the tumultuous atmosphere.

It took the intervention of JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, to restore order to the meeting.

The policy meeting, an annual event, authorizes the commencement of admissions into tertiary institutions across the country.
