Liverpool, winners of 2022 Community Shield

Community Shield: Liverpool on top as Haaland struggles on official debut

NEWS DIGEST – The season-opening Community Shield between Liverpool and Manchester City was billed as a battle of two new strikers and there was no doubt about who came out on top.

Liverpool is the winner of the Community Shield for the first time in 16 years after a debut goal from Darwin Nunez wrapped up a 3-1 win over the Premier League champions Manchester City at Leicester’s King Power Stadium.

In a contest befitting of Liverpool and Manchester City’s intense rivalry last season, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s teams produced a compelling match as new arrivals Erling Haaland and Nunez made their first competitive outings following big-money moves this summer.

Reds supporters have a new hero in Darwin Nunez, who immediately showed what prompted the club to pay Benfica £64m with a debut to remember.

The Uruguay international started as a substitute but won a late penalty which Mohamed Salah converted to put Liverpool 2-1 up, then scored his first competitive goal for the club to “put the icing on the cake” of his performance.

At the other end of the pitch, Erling Haaland had a first game to forget as the Norwegian missed opportunities in front of the goal which contributed to his side’s 3-1 defeat.
