2022 Commonwealth Games: Taiwo Laidi wins Nigeria’s fifth medal

NEWS DIGEST – Nigeria has won its first Silver medal and fifth medal in total at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games after Taiwo Laidi clinched Silver in the Women’s 76kg on Day 5 of the competition.

The 19-year-old weightlifter lifted a total weight of 216kg on Tuesday afternoon, setting a Junior Commonwealth Games Record, bringing Nigeria’s total medals to five, which includes two Gold medals, one Silver medal, and two Bronze medals.

Taiwo finished second behind Canada’s Maya Laylor, who set a new Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 128kg.

The five medals that Nigeria has won so far in the competition were recorded in the weightlifting event, with the country currently ranked 9th on the medals standings.
