AFCON: ‘We are in a situation of failure’ – Algeria coach speaks after loss to Equatorial Guinea
NEWS DIGEST – Algeria coach, Djamel Belmadi, has clarified why his team was defeated by Equatorial Guinea at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.
He said, his team lost because the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea defended with a lot of desire and determination.
Algeria who is the defending champion was defeated by Equatorial Guinea with 1-0 in their second 2021 AFCON tie on yesterday.
Equatorial Guinea’s Esteban Fernandez scored the goal of the match in the second half to give Equatorial Guinea an outstanding 1-0 win over Algeria in Douala.
Speaking after the game, Algeria coach, Belmadi said, “It’s not the expected result and yet we did everything, we got several chances but the ball did not go in. We are in a situation of failure, it is a lean moment.
“Football is not always about rational reasons but let’s be sure, we will fight to stay in this competition. It will be against a great team from Côte d’Ivoire which is made up of players playing in the biggest leagues.
“Regarding the opponent, Equatorial Guinea, they defended with a lot of desire, determination and we couldn’t find the fault, it’s a situation of failure.”
Presently, Algeria is sitting in the 4th position in Group E with just 1 point from two games.
On Thursday, the Algerian team will be confronting Ivory Coast in their last Group game.
