AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles kickoff qualification campaign on winning note

NEWS DIGEST – Super Eagles defeated Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in their first Group A encounter on Thursday evening to kickstart their 2023 AFCON qualification campaign on a winning note.

Jose Peseiro’s first game in Nigeria saw him call the big boys to action as Victor Osimhen, Sadiq Umar and Samuel Chukwueze were listed as starters in a 4-4-2 set-up.

Nigeria suddenly found themselves behind in the 11th of the game after Jonathan Morsay headed into the net Kamara’s cross from the left side after going past Troost Ekong easily to give Leone Stars the lead.

However, with an assist from Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi responded for the Super Eagles just 5 minutes later as he finished with his trademark of scoring by slotting the ball in the bottom corner of the visitors’ net to restore disparity at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Victor Oshimen doubled the lead for Nigeria when he lashed into the net Moses Simon’s nod down inside the 18-yard box just four minutes before the halftime whistle.

There were no goals in the second half of the encounter as players from both teams lacked the finishing touches needed to convert multiple chances that were created.

The result spelt relief for Jose Peseiro who had lost his first games with the team and was playing his game on home soil.

The Super Eagles play Sao Tome and Principe in the next match of the qualification round at the Adrar Stadium in Morocco on Monday, 13th June 2022 as they hope to take charge of Group A, which is currently controlled by Guinea-Bissau.
