ABU joins SSANU, NASU warning strike
NEWS DIGEST – Two unions at the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, have joined the ongoing nationwide strike embarked upon by the ASUU.
The unions, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, chose to embark on a warning strike following their separate congresses held on Monday at the institution.
Addressing newsmen, the SSANU Chairman, Mohammed Yunusa, said the warning strike was premised upon the failure of the Federal Government to implement agreements it entered into with the union.
Similarly, Mohammed Sunusi-Garba of NASU said the Federal Government had failed to meet their demands, including a poor sharing formula of earned allowance and the hijack of appointments meant for their members by the academic staff.
He also listed payment of minimum wage arrears as another of their grievances.
Recall that on Feb. 14, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began a four-week warning strike as a result of the alleged inability of the Federal Government to address their demands.
This action by the two unions had further crippled both academic and administrative activities in some public universities, as directed by the national body of the unions on March 25.
